The Charge Of Knights (31.5" X 20")
This relief captures most effectively the force and energy of a charge of medieval
knights.
As the knights surged forward, knee to knee, with lances at the ready and banners flying
they were an awesome sight. Even before battle commenced, the pounding of the hooves,
the clashing of arms and the resounding battle-cries were destined to strike terror into the
hearts of the enemy.
The knights here wear armour of the 13th century. The body and head are covered by a
‘suit’ of chain mail, topped by the Heaume. The sleeves are prolonged to cover the hand
with mail-gauntlets and the Chausses, similarly, protect the feet.
Over the mail is the Surcoat, displaying along with ailettes and shield, the wearer’s coat
of arms as a means of identification for friend and foe.
These knights are armed with Sword and Lance and lean forward in their high-
pommelled saddles as the charge gathers momentum.
